The Interval

Havener + Jackson

Interval is set into the sloping terrain of Yakushima, where mountainous forest, meadow, and distant ocean meet. The house follows a single axis along the hillside, creating a sequence of spaces that move between these different conditions.

Toward the forest, the architecture settles into the hillside through retaining walls and smaller openings. In the opposite direction, the house opens toward the meadow and ocean, allowing the landscape and views to expand.

The hallway connects these conditions, creating a series of pauses, thresholds, and transitions as the house moves through the landscape.
